Valentine's Day

This past week we celebrated Valentine’s Day. On that day, I woke up early, before anyone was out of bed, and went into my office. I cut out big hearts in red paper, one for each of my four boys, including my husband. I decorated them with sticker hearts and wrote I love you. I put them on the table, one in each person’s place. The house was still dark, everyone still sleeping. I left a little chocolate treat on each heart and snuck back downstairs for my morning workout.

I wanted my boys to wake up on this day of love and know that they are loved. I wanted them to know that someone loved them enough to take a few extra minutes to leave a small surprise. We do these things for people we love. Do things we think will make them happy. Make sacrifices, small and big. Set aside our own convenience to honor things that are important to them. Use words to say I love you. Offer a warm embrace, a kiss, or a comforting hand.

My question for you on this Valentine’s Day is, what have you done to show yourself love? When have you set a boundary to honor something that is important to you? What sacrifices have you made to ensure your own self care? What words have you used, what act of kindness to show you care about you? What physical care have you offered to soothe, warm, and care for your body?

On this Valentine’s Day, as you consider the people in your life who you love, I hope you are on that list. As you consider what kindness you want to offer to others, I hope you are kind to you. As you put your love out into the world, I hope you, too, are a recipient of that love.

Wishing you a beautiful Valentine’s Day. You are worthy of love.
